Check your case online

Check your case status online

Two government systems, two different numbers. USCIS handles applications and petitions; the Immigration Court (EOIR) handles hearings. You do not need an attorney for either lookup.

USCIS application or petition

Use your receipt number.

  1. Find your receipt number It is on the receipt notice USCIS mailed you (Form I-797C, Notice of Action). It has 13 characters: three letters followed by ten numbers, for example IOE0912345678.
  2. Open the USCIS Case Status page Use the button on this page. It takes you to the official USCIS site.
  3. Type the number without dashes or spaces Then press the button to check status.
  4. Read the result The page shows the last action USCIS took on your case and the date. It does not show how long the rest of the process will take.

Good to know

  • Processing times are a separate tool on the USCIS site. Case status tells you what happened; processing times estimate how long cases like yours are taking.
  • A free USCIS online account lets you receive notices by email or text.
  • If your case is in Immigration Court, use the EOIR lookup next to this one instead.
  • If the status says a notice was mailed and you have not received it in a few weeks, or if the status is unclear, bring the printout to your consultation.

Immigration Court hearing

Use your A-number.

  1. Find your A-number It starts with "A" followed by nine digits (for example A012345678). It appears on your Notice to Appear, work permit, or any letter from immigration. If yours has only eight digits, add a zero at the front.
  2. Open the EOIR case information system Use the button. It is the official Department of Justice site.
  3. Type the nine digits Then submit.
  4. Read the result It shows your next hearing date, time, and court, and any decisions on your case. Check it before every hearing, because dates change.

Good to know

  • The same information is available by phone, 24 hours a day, on the EOIR automated line: 1-800-898-7180.
  • Missing a hearing can result in a removal order issued in your absence. If the system shows a date you did not know about, call the office the same day.
